Stuart Dunn - Winner of Travel Photographer of the Year 2011

Travel Photographer of the Year competition is one of the world’s most prestigious competitions in the Travel Photography genre, with many of my photographic heroes amongst previous winners lists. Photographers from around 90 countries from all over the world entered, submitting several thousand entries so to say that I am over the moon with the news would be an understatement.

The 2011 Travel Photographer of the Year awards were judged by an international panel of experts, including travel and wildlife photographer Steve Bloom, Caroline Metcalfe Director of Photography for Conde Nast, stock photography expert Jerry Tavin, Colin Finlay of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Matt Phillips Editor of Travel Africa, Mary Robert Head of Photography for American International University, Melissa de Witt Editor of Hotshoe, Manfred Zollner Managing Editor of Fotomagazin (Germany), Debbie Ireland former head of the AA Photo Library, photographer and TV cameraman Jeremy Hoare, landscape and panoramic photographer Nick Meers, designer and digital imaging expert Terry Steeley, and freelance editor and writer Emma Thomson – plus TPOTY founder, travel photographer Chris Coe.

My work will be exhibited at the Royal Geographical Society in London from the 20th of June until the 19th of August 2012.

As winner of the ‘Wild Moments’ One Shot category the prize is to undertake a commission on behalf of Elephant Family in Valparai in Southern India.
TPOTY will, together with Elephant Family, fund the winning trip to India. On the prize commission, I will be spending time with the lead conservationist on this project and with the people who work on the plantation. The wildlife I am likely to encounter are herds of wild elephants, along with an array of local wildlife which includes; tigers, bison, monkeys, the lion tailed macaque and several species of deer.
A selection of the best images from this shoot will be exhibited during TPOTY’s 2012 exhibition at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London next June, July and August. The images will also be made available as limited edition prints, the proceeds from which I have decided to donate entirely to the Elephant Family

  1. I should like to spend the whole of my life in traveling abroad, if I could anywhere borrow another life to spend afterwards at home.
