Street Fight - Joe Scarborough

Street Fight

ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS FROM HIGHLY ACCLAIMED SHEFFIELD ARTIST JOE SCARBOROUGH

£12,860

Image size: 38" x 30"
Framed size: 42" x 34"

Joe Scarborough is a now an artist of international repute. Born in Pitsmoor, Sheffield in 1938, the artist has created a wealth of everyday ‘real’ images depicting the life and people of South Yorkshire using his own experiences and background.
Joe began work as a laboratory assistant at Batchelors and then became a face worker at the Thorpe Hesley Colliery. He was inspired to paint by the contrast of the darkness of the mines against the lightness of the real world above ground level.
In 1968 disenchantment with the pits he became a ‘Jack of all Trades’. He was a labourer, municipal park gardener and a washer upper for some years, whilst nurturing a dream to be a full-time painter. For years he pushed a hand cart, packed with paintings round all his local pubs selling what he could in almost folk-lore tradition - becoming at times, like the characters he went on to portray in later scenes.
His paintings were popular and sold, sometimes for as much as £10 - an encouragement that led to his life-long dream being realised. His first one-man show lasted for two years at the Attic Cafe near Sheffield's main bus station. One-man and mixed exhibitions followed which took the everyday scenes of Yorkshire life from Sheffield to Rotherham to London to San Francisco to Chicago and back of course to his first love, Sheffield.
Scarborough paintings now appear in several major collections and numerous works have been imprinted. The images, the humour, the friendships, the story-telling is still the same.
Joe’s largest work dominates the entrance to the Odeon Cinema in Sheffield - a mural depicting the history of Sheffield. The vibrant colours compete with action packed visual narratives of the subjects and scenes portrayed in all Scarborough paintings.

Kate Jackson Ex Long Blondes at Smart Art Galleries

Former Long Blondes singer Kate Jacksoncreated all of the band’s artwork over their six year career. The Sheffield based Indie icons rose to prominence after years of toiling up and down the country as the ‘best unsigned band in Britain’. They won the NME’s Philip Hall Radar Award in 2006 and signed to Rough Trade records shortly afterwards. Two critically acclaimed albums and two world tours followed. Their songs were full of femme fatales, failed actresses, sixties pop idols and glamorous housewives, each one its own mini kitchen sink drama. Kate’s single and album covers were intended to bring the lyrics alive visually, creating a fantasy world for the fans to enter into and become part of. Her cover stars include Diana Dors, Dusty Springfield, Faye Dunaway and Kim Novak and reference film, music, pop culture and travel.
In October 2008, Kate Jackson announced her intention to follow a solo career after the band’s demise, and has since been writing with ex Suede guitarist Bernard Butler.

Kerry Darlington at Smart Art Galleries

KERRY'S BEGINNINGS

Kerry Darlington is a Welsh artist, born 1974 in Rhyl, North Wales. She was heavily inspired by magical fairy tale picture books and stories during her childhood, and had a particular love for Arthur Rackham's intricate pen and ink work. This influenced her to take a degree in Illustration, with intentions of becoming a children's book Illustrator. Following this she discovered ‘Art Nouveau’ and the Pre-Raphaelite artists’. She found this work so hauntingly beautiful that it absorbed her and it still has a profound effect on her own art.

GROWTH & RECOGNITION

For the last seven years Kerry has built a reputation for her original, decorative designs which became hugely popular, focusing primarily on trees and nature.

She recently took the decision to release her book Illustrations as Unique Edition prints - the ‘Midnight Garden’ sold out within a month and her ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ was so popular that it sold-out rapidly before obtaining high values on the secondary market. Her book illustration work is next to include ‘Peter Pan’ by J.M. Barrie and ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ by Enid Blyton.
In May 2012 she was awarded ‘Best-Selling Published Artist’ at a ceremony by the Fine Art Trade Guild.

TECHNIQUE & STYLE

On her original pieces, Kerry works with texture, acrylics and resin. She works in layers to build up depth and create more light. She uses resin as a medium rather than a varnish on the original paintings.

With her ‘Unique Editions’, whilst in essence they are prints, each one is some way unique. She creates small 3D additions which are hand-worked individually and adhered to the print. The background is also hand embellished, and all the work has resin hand-applied, making each print look like an original painting.
